"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

I just read NEW HIT. About the work out routines, you list 4 routines for beginners. Do I do routine #1 for a the first week, then move to routine #2 on the second week and so on. Or am I just not getting it.

Thanks

You do #1 for six weeks, with weeks 1 and 2 being a gradual progression up to 12 exercises. All the other routines charted on page 132 are also for six weeks.

I am 40 years old and getting back into high intensity training. I remember my first foray into the task about 17 years ago. I was in college and had recently purchased Dr. Darden's "High Intensity Workouts for Nautilus". Those machines were state of the art at the time and provided exceptional resistance, positioning, and isolation. Especially the lat pulldown machine.

I started my training weighing 195 pounds and had measured my body fat at 14%. The first workout was as hard as described in the book. I was nauseated, literally, and had to visit the rest room after the workout. Nevertheless, I was not one to give up, and have a high threshold for pain. The next workout was equally intense and nauseating. The after effects finally wore off after about five or six workouts. It's amazing how fast the body adapts.

The think that I noticed most was how quickly my strength improved. I went from being able to grab the rim of a basketball goal, to actually dunking with two hands. This is not a lie. My back, especially my lats, were ripped and my peers were impressed. But the most amazing thing of all was the fact that after 12 weeks of this intense program I gained 10lbs of body weight but lost 6% body fat. I gained 20lbs of pure muscle, and could feel it. I was in the best shape of my life.

I think back on this, and although I was young and in better shape, I know I can still get these results. I am not crippled or have any impediment to training intensely. The only thing I need to be aware of is at my age, I need to take it a bit slower at first. But I do know the incredible results this workout can achieve.

Dr. Darden, thank you for sharing this wonderful knowledge with us. And I hope to show you some phenomenal results.

Just to start, I'm now using a Bowflex xTreme SE as my workout tool. I will workout three times a week. I am following your superhydration program as well. My weight now is 230lbs. I would put my body fat percentage at 25-28%. I hope to shed at least half of this in six weeks. Another 2-3% in the next six weeks. I also plan to gain a few pounds of muscle. I would like to be somewhere around 220lbs with less then 10% body fat within six months. I know this is a tough goal, but with HIT, I think it's possible.

Dr. Darden, I did a report on you and Casey Viatar 10 years ago in college about the success of his training. Is this system as good as way back during Mr. viatar,s reign? Ron Branson

Dear Ellington!

I have read your last book. Thanks for great job,the book is amazing! Also the same can say about the previous one (have read for 3 times).I really like to read about bodybuilding and people in 1970-1990.I used your BIG routine from your last book, but there was one problem with it...Some years ago I used Mike Mentser`s preexhaustion routine.I got it wrong. It was a mistake to do 8 sets in common (4 single and 2 supersets) per workout, how I understand it now.The results were amazing, but I got an illness for 1,5 weeks soon, whhat happened to me very rarely. After some time I repeated to use the routine- with the same result(great gain and illness for a week).

Then I thought that Mike`s routin is too intense for my recovery ability and the recovery "takes some energy"from my immunity system.Since that i hadn`t used it. The last year in my training consisted of HIT routines. The gains were rather good(better in strength than in size),but I liked it.I prepared myself for the big routine and used it how it was prescribed in your book. But there on the third week of it I got ill.Does it mean that I have very poor recovery ability,or may be there is some other reason for me, that when I start to use a really intense routine- I got ill? What can you advise? Waiting for Your answer.
Best regards!
P.s.Sorry for mistakes in my english!

Mark,

It's difficult to say what your problem is. But it sounds like your recovery is poor and perhaps your immunity system is in a weakened state.

Maybe you need to get a thorough physical examination from a physician that includes a blood and urine analysis?

Dear Dr Darden,

as I am residing in the Netherlands, Europe, I would like to ask if its possible to receive your book in PDf format, so I can save the 48 dollar shipping costs? I adore your view of classic bodybuilding and this new book might be a big help in my progress. Thank you in advance,
