"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

Vic Tanny?
are we allowed two guesses?
if not, ignore my second guess of Milo Steinborn?

it's gotta be Vic Tanny!
(great article on "chest expansion",
Ell... in the old days that and certain
muscle controls were a really big deal
in bodybuilding... and "breathing squats" were a major topic in training)

Is it Chuck Ahrens?

I started back at pullovers last week, I was surprised at just how sore it made my triceps and even my chest got pretty pumped.

I put the smallest plates closest to the dumbbell handle, it seems not as awkward that way, I can more easily get my fingers around them, but still puts an uncomfortable strain on my wrists.

Grasping the dumbbell with both hands on the handle is better but again a bit awkward as one hand has to be over the other (it feels as if one arm is taking more weight). I guess I'll just have to take it slow and very gradually increase the resistance.

Here's another clue.

This man entered and placed in the 1946 Mr. California contest.

Jack Delinger?

Putnam or Eric Pedersen did not enter the 1946 Mr. California, so it wasn't him.

And it wasn't Jack Delinger.

This is a bit of a guess...as I feverishly scan through my copy of TNBFOSR for any clues. This is a shot in the dark, but is it Bob McCune?

QmAn,

Indeed, the correct man is in that list. All you have to do now, is pick the right one?

Leo Stern at 5'8" and a 49" chest has a chance to be the man.

Ellington Darden

It's definitely not Leo Stern.

I don't know who it is, but I think I know who it isn't:-

We know it's not Jack Delinger and Leo Stern doesn't seem to have a big rib cage, so not him.

Rex Ravelle ditto.

It can't be Elias Rodrigez.

I don't think it would be anyone in the short class. Hmmm, it's a tough cookie!

I'll bet if Kim Wood was online now, he'd know who it was. Kim, where are you?

k38wood

it's Bill Trumbo!(...Bill later
used the name "Ray Olive")

Ellington Darden

Bingo! Kim Wood is the winner.

The man who's rib cage most impressed Arthur Jones was Bill Trumbo.

Jones showed me an impressive side-chest pose of Trumbo from a magazine, which I wish I could find as I'd like to post it. Maybe Kim can help?

Anyway, Jones said Trumbo had shoulders that were extremely broad (close to 24"), plus a huge rib cage and chest.

Eric Peterson is Charles Roland Putnam.

The Blair protein guy changes his name.

Arnold called himself Arnold Strong for awhile.

What is going on?

Have we got any more examples of name changes?

k38wood

I'm sorry. Bill Trumbo never went
by the name "Ray Olive"...Ray Olive
was one of Arthur Jones' old buddies
from the "snake show days"...Ray was
the tail-gunner on Bo Miller's B-25
in WWII. When Nautilus got up and running Ray came and helped Arthur out... a fascinating fellow and
a really good guy.

When you get around pro-wrestlers you'll find that all of 'em have fake names...Pederson wrestled as a Russian
for many years. Many of the old-time
strength guys were pro-wrestlers also...Wayne Coleman(Super Star Billy
Graham) etc.

Regardless if it's possible or not, I think it looks bizarre. For me it's no different than 'it's possible to get to 300lbs @ 2% bodyfat' or what not, but why? Is it pleasing to the eye? To whose? It's not really something you want to promote to the masses, because even if it's not genetically predetermined, I doubt that look will appeal to many people, and I thought that that's what this whole HIT drive was about, to get it out there and popular and accepted. If you come at it from a perspective of bodybuilding, natural or not, or people who can use there chests for side tables, you're not going to get it done.
