When I watched Mentzer train in 1978, he did one set to failure of 12 or 13 exercises. That was it.

And he said that's what he'd been doing several times a week for the last month.

I don't have any first-hand knowledge of what Mentzer did with Yates, other than he worked with him for a while.

In the book The Wisdom of Mike Mentzer, it has the workouts that Yates was put through by Mike. It is a pretty interesting read (the book), but I too have seen Yates' video and in no way does it reflect Mike's workouts with him (save for the fact that it is of considerably less volume than most other Olympia bodybuilders). By watching that video, one can see how he could tear his bicep, what with all the jerky motions on nearly every exercise.

Have not seen The Wisdom of Mentzer book. Can you give us an example from the book of one of Mentzer's routines for Yates?

thanks for that Darden!,from what you said in the last reply,id think he was doing his last program from heavy duty 2(mind & body) witch he wrights in his book for the final steps of heavy duty training,i think they a mostly compound movements too,(i ant got the book on hand right at mo,(its at home safe lol)
Dr Darden,in my gym in nz i have brought some nuatilus machines (cheep too) $1500 kiwi dollars for 6 machines in good order, 1,4 way neck,2,side lat-shoulder press,3,pull over!,4,tricep,5,bicep,6,leg extention-curl ,i plan to put pics of Mike,Casey and Ray useing them on the walls above where they are set up to show what they were made for.

i also got a lower back (lumba) new,i love these machines ,they are close to fall prove and so smooth in movement( and i dont have to ad weight to the stack,Art and the boys back then new what they were doing id say!now id like to find (the big blue monster) peck deck-incline press and a leg extention-leg press,o and if i won lotto a behind neck back machine too! but for now ill try to break the chains on what ive got! thx again for ya time!

here is the routine which mike had yates doing when he trained him in 1992...

monday
dumbbell flyes
machine incline presses

nautilus lateral raises
nautilus rear delt raises

nautilus multi-triceps
triceps pushdowns

wednesday
nautilus pullovers
lat pulldowns
hammer rows

hammer shrugs

nautilus biceps
ninety degree preacher curls-one set
to failure, plus four half reps
(partials)

friday
leg extensions
leg presses
squats
leg curls
stiff-legged deadlifts
calf raises-two sets

everything was done "one set to failure" unless otherwise sepcified and most were done with no or little rest in between exercises.

it's also interesting to note that mike is quoted in the book as saying that he did not think dorian would win that year..."i didnt think he had the physique they were looking for. that plus his association with me i thought would have caused some political problems. but then i hadnt taken into account that the contest was being held in europe, and i know how the fans are over there about real muscle."

it's a pretty decent book with a lot of quotes from mike. for those out there who can get around the whole "john little is just in it to make a buck" thinking, i highly recommend it. if not for the training advice, then for the philosophical and moral advice given, like the H.U.N.G.E.R. principle.

Ok - so I've been doing my research and I am a little bit confused as the the actual benefits of doing plyometric or medicine ball "explosive or power" type exercises. I am thinking about changing a Youth Tennis Performance Enhancement program over to more HIT style exercises while focusing on tennis performance. Any thoughts? What are good defenses for switching away from plyometrics?

One good reason for swithing away from plyometrics is impact forces on joints.

Another good reason is because you will find it is inferior to HIT for building muscle, by a far margain.

Bigger stonger muscles make any athlete faster and more powerful. Fast movements such as plyometrics just unload the muscles during training.

There are more reasons for doing HIT instead of any sort of explosive training, I would advise you to read the Nautilus Bulletins.

Also back to the topic of the book. Ordered mine on Oct 30th. Im in Canada and still waiting. Everyone is writing about how good it is and I can't wait.

I'm in the UK and ordered the book on the 7th, unfortuately being such a stingy arsehole I chose the cheapest delivery option: 7-14 business days, it was only after I placed the order that it twigged, THATS POTENTIALLY 3 WEEKS!

Great book. I just received mine. The shot of John Wood with the Custom Globe Type Curl Bar from Atomic Athletic is outstanding. Thanks for using it Dr. Darden! It is one of the more unusual pieces. John has really pushed the envelope in grip training.

Ever since 9/11 everything at the border has gotten out of hand.
When I used to buy supplements, I'd get them online because even with shipping they were cheaper then are GNC stores. I had to stop that because it took forever for a supplement to be declared legal in Canada. We have different laws on supplements here.

The worst was getting the nautilus machines across the border. Nobody believed the prices I was buying the machines for, even with a receit. They took me into a back room the one time and had 3 big cops grilling me about the price. I shouldn't have to pay taxes on anything over 20 years old anyways.

Even when I have payed for used Dr. Darden books on E-bay it takes a few weeks. The 2 companies I have delt with that can move stuff fast across the border is Dell and Amazon. Im assuming its because they are such large and well known companies.

Oh well though, the new book will be here soon and then I will be content.

Dr. Darden, Your new book is wonderful-really brings back memories. I'm honored to have some of my shots included. I took at least 100-200 shots of the Mentzers working out and can only find a handful.

Anyhow, the last time I was out there I witnessed some of the most brutal workouts I've ever seen. The Mentzers were into "rest/pause" at the time(actually I only saw them use this technique on chest).

There is an Ironman Mag interview with Danny Padilla(I have it somewhere) where he says something about Mike and Ray doing more than one set. I talked a lot with Ray, and I believe it's a matter of interpretation.

Ray claimed that he did one work set, and what led up to that one set were warm-ups. Their warm-up sets would wipe out the average trainee, so that's where I think the discrepencies lie.

Anyhow, thanks for the book, and I hope if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask-I'll try to answer about what I saw, to the best of my ability(and memory). Jon DeVaul

Received a nice email from Boyer Coe, who just finished reading the book. Boyer said that Alvin Roy, who Kim Wood talks about in chapter 2, put him through his very first workout in the early 1960s. In fact, Boyer said Alvin visited him in 1970, saw some of Boyer's IronMan magazines, and read one of Jones's articles at Boyer's home.

"I told Alvin that he should check out Jones's Nautilus machines . . . and he did," Boyer remembered. "A while later, he bought some Nautilus machines for the San Diego Chargers."

It's interesting to me how various Louisiana personalities tied into Jones and Nautilus.

Also, received a note from Ben Sorenson, who I interviewed in chapter 1. Ben sent me a great photo taken in 1963, showing him standing near the site in Santa Monica where Vic Tanny's dungeon was located.

The building had been demolished but the stairs leading to the underground dungeon were still there. Ben was pointing to a loft area under the stairs, where he said he spent many a night sleeping on a bedroll.

"Vic paid me $25 a week, plus a free place to sleep," Ben remembered. "To tell the truth, I would've worked there for free . . . because it was such a great atmosphere."

Hi Dr. Darden, sir. I'm new here and twenty three years old. I ordered this book from one of John Wood's sites, and I have to say, it's a great HIT volume, very very informitive. I trained the unvarnished arm cycle on friday, and I am training it again today, and I can tell you that my arms are noticably thicker today!

A note: I haven't weight trained in a few years and could barely use a pair of 25 pound Olympic dumbells in place of the barbell- in fact I had to stop at three reps as my left arm just couldn't lift the dumbell any further- and this from a guy who can easily crank out ten to twelve double towel pullups! I can't wait to post on here more often with some more results. But here's a question:

How long should we wait between training cycles? I plan on hitting the legs after this, as well as my back, and calves for cycles. Please let me know.

I like the plan of 2 weeks specializaton followed by 2 weeks of a basic routine. Then, you can do another 2 weeks specialization of a different body part followed by 2 weeks of a basic routine. You can continue doing that 2/2 plan for many months.

BTW, the arm workout was great today, though, I tried the curls with about 30 pounds today, and I was forced to cheat out 6 reps. I don't like cheating, so should I just drop down to say, 15 pounds per arm? It shocks me to say it, but those one rep pullups and dips really do take almost everything out of you. Thanks,

I'd say 15-pound dumbbells would be too light. Try 20s.
