"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

Count me in! In October, I had ballooned back up almost to 250. I'm back down to 220. I plan on being under 10% (probably 7 or 8) at 200 or slightly less.

1800 isn't a bad starting point. A Korr MetaCheck test I took a while back indicated my daily maintenance calories to be around 3,200, and my goal is to lose around 15 pounds of fat over the next 8 to 10 weeks, so I'm taking in between 2000 and 2400 per day, aiming for a fat loss of 1.5 to 2 pounds per week. I will adjust the number weekly based on how much fat I'm losing per week to keep it in the 1.5 to 2 pound range.

I plan to be in the best condition of my life by summer, and if I'm lean enough in the 170's I may consider doing a natural competition as a middleweight (rather get a little leaner and be at the top of the middleweights than be at the low end of the light heavyweights). If nothing else, being in top condition again will be good advertising for our training facility.

Hey Drew,

You can count me in as well. Lately it's been tough as I am in my first year of University and will remain in classes until april. Of course, when exams come along, they don't help much either. This is on top of all homework, part-time job, and a social life.

I would like your advice. During the school year, what is a good way to get in the training I'd like to do?

I'm rather lean and get into good shape pretty quick when I eat and train strictly, but during school it's hard. I want to start early to get in great shape for the summer.

I'm sitting at about 11-12% bodyfat curently, and am weighing in at 165lbs at exactly 6 feet.

It's January, and being busy or not, I want to start getting into great shape again.

I'd appreciate any advice you can give.

Thank you.

Eric

Bowflex

Yeah, I'll go too. I was down to between 8 and 10% last summer, but I have "softened" a little over the winter. We moved last fall, and I kind of got off track a little with the work outs and the intake with the chaos of the move and all.

I actually just started this week to get leaned back down again.

If we're going to do this, we should give our weights and BF% now, so we can see how we all do. I'll get out the calipers in the morning and see where I'm at.

Working around a class schedule can be tough. When I was in college, I made sure never to schedule any classes before 10:00am so that I could work out in the mornings and sleep in on my non-workout days, but that might not be practical for everyone.

It's not always easy, but if there is any way you can work your training into your day between classes it will be easier than trying to fit it in later at night when you might need to be at work or have to study.

Drew,

How does your strength training change, if at all when you try and lose bodyfat?

Do you keep trying to increase weight/reps on all exercises or just try to maintain strength and muscle?

Hey Drew,

What has been your experience with carb depleting/loading? Does it yield good results with proper application?

thanks

I'm in. As soon as I get my bowflex. I am currently at 207 at 6'. I think my body at was 18% last time I checked, but I was slightly heavier then. I would like to get down to about 8-10% before summer.

I'm going to get cut also. I have been dropping calories for the past 2 months. I want to lose enough fat to have a good set of abs. So, I am there also.

does anyone think the 1500 calories is too low? Is this for someone that sits around all day. Like i said i was going to start at 1800 calories because im always moving all day im not sitting around. And i am going to do some walks on other days because i want to do something everyday. But i still don't think cardio is a main component of fat loss but i still want to move and shit.

I'm already there. Worked at getting as lean as possible during the holidays and am currently in the best shape of my life. 160lbs @ ~5.5% - 6% BF at a height of 5'10". Good luck to all you. I'm in maintenance mode now. Not interested in losing what I have earned.

I'd join in this worthy goal but my extensive aerobic training coupled with HIT workouts keep me in very lean, muscular shape the year round.

You all have my best wishes here though!

It doesn't change. I continue trying to increase weight and/or reps on all exercises.

Nick,

I have not experimented with it, but that isn't something someone needs to worry about unless they are attempting to peak for a contest.

Start at 1800/day and record your fat loss after two weeks (weigh yourself at the same time of day each time). If you are not losing between 1 and 2 pounds of fat per week, gradually reduce the calories by 100/day for a week at a time until you are.

Sesame,

We want to be lean WITH muscle though. The aerobics most definitely works against that (there is now research showing how aerobics interferes with muscle growth).

So this Sesame joker is back. Hey Sesame/Cherry, we're not impressed with your scrawy ass. You brag about how ripped you are but you're 6'5" and only 212lbs. I weighed 211lbs., ripped, at 5'-11" in my last contest. Cut back on the aerobics and put on a little muscle before opening your big mouth.

As for everyone else, good luck with this. I'm planning to drop 10-15lbs. for a contest in the summer, I'm at 235 now.
