"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

One thing about all the Tarzans ...

Ever wonder why they didn't have beards ?

Everyone was as clean shaven as a lawyer going to court for an important trial. Sure, they had that big knife but come on ... thay aren't getting a shave like that with it.

:>/

LOL... Tarzan doesn't shave because he doesn't have a beard silly! And they don't have court in the jungle. c'mon Crotalus, get with the programn!

Yes, that's fine.

I thinking about starting this routine but need to ask: If someone isn't at the advanced level can this routine be done 3x a week or would that lead to overtraining due to the intensity?

I believe you could do the routine three times per week, at least for a while until 3 or 4 of your exercises plateaued.

Dr. Darden,

This is a great idea! I've been messing around eith the idea of getting a seperate bench for hyperextensions, and I never even thought of using my bowflex. It'll save me a good amount of money which is pretty tight at the moment, thank you!

Dr. Darden,

I've been using the Tarzan routine and found it to be quite efficient as to time saving and improving the intensity of my workouts.

I'm thinking of incorporating this routine as my main routine but was wondering if I could make the two exercises between the 2 minute breaks body part specific.
For ex: Chest flies supersetted with Chest Press, Lateral Raise with Overhead Press, etc. Or is there a specific logic to the exercises chosen?

Those substitutions should work fine.

Dr. Darden,

Believe it or not Cheeta is still alive after all these years.

Cheeta is happily retired-and spends his time making paintings that fetch quite a dollar. I'm sure anyone can do a search on the internet and get information on him.

Another interesting fact is that the Tarzan series you mentioned was filmed in Silver Springs, Fl. Silver Springs, Fl also was home to the filming of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Dear Dr. Ellington,

I want to do the exercises in the 30/30/30, with some modifications - Is it alright?

For my girlfriend, who needs more development on shoulders and a strong hand grip, we tried this variation:

. Squat with barbell, immediately followed by
. Pull over with dumbbell, immediately followed by
. Calf raise machine
- Rest for 2 minutes.

. Parallel-bar (negative only) dip, immediately followed by
. Standing overhead press with barbell, immediately followed by
. Prone back raise on bench
- Rest for 2 minutes.

. Regular chinup (negative only) with supinated grip, immediately followed by
. Stiff-legged deadlift with barbell, immediately followed by
. Reverse trunk curl on floor, or on a incline bench
- Rest for 2 minutes.

. Wrist curl with barbell

However, we (me and my girlfriend) tried to mix "The Tarzan's Routine" with the 30/30/30 in a workout of ten exercises with some experimental variations. Checking the results obtained by us, we think this is a good adaptation/variation of the original Tarzan Routine, in a 30/30/30 style.

- Squat with barbell, immediately followed by
- Pullover with dumbbell, immediately followed by
- Calf raise machine
Rest for 2 minutes.

- Standing overhead press with barbell, immediately followed by
- Parallel-bar dip (negative only), immediately followed by
- Prone back raise on bench
Rest for 2 minutes.

- Stiff-legged deadlift with barbell, immediately followed by
- Reverse trunk curl
Rest for 2 minutes.

- Regular chinup with supinated grip (negative only), immediately followed by
- Wrist curl with barbell
Rest for 2 minutes.

What do you think, Dr. Darden?

Thank you very much!
Annibal Franco, excited with 30/30/30

Ps. I'll do the routine no more than once a week.
