"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

Dr.Darden,
What do you think of the following routine I am considering trying. Do you think it will be effective or cause overtraining.
train 2x per week
day 1
negative accentuated leg ext
negative accentuated leg curls
negative accentuated calf raise
negative dips
negative chins
negative machine curls
negative tricep ext machine

day 2
leg ext
leg curl
calf raise
dips
chins
machine curls
tricep extensions

1 day for negative, one day for full range positive and negative. what do you think of this approach? should I do negative on both training days? do you see any problems with my exercise selection?

This is just my opinion, but I would drop the machine curls and tricep extensions. If you're going to negative failure, the chins, and dips are more then enough.

looks good, if I remember correctly DR Darden and AJ both advise not to go to full failure on negative exercises, either go untl you can longer raise the weight positively or just until the lower under control cannot be safely accomplished and this will stimulate more than enough growth.

If you do drop the positive and neg workout(no.2) then how how will you work your cardio/metabolic conditioning - just a thought.

I was thinking about doing the first, negative only workpout twice. Any thoughts or comments.
I am a little leary of dropping direct arm exercise as ihave lost arm size in the past using a mentzer consolidated routine with no direct arm work.

I have been training negative only for the past 17 months. At age 50 I am as strong as ever. I never do over 6 exercises in a workout. You may want to alt. no chins/dips with direct arm work. Check out Drew Bayes web site about Eccentric Edge.

I would NOT do negative-only or negative-accentuated calf raises. Negative exercise makes the muscles VERY sore...sore to the point that you won't be able to walk if you're not careful (and I'm not kidding).

Hello Charlie,

You state you are as strong as ever - did you maintain or gain muscle from the 6 exercises? How many days per week/month are you doing the workout?

Regards,

Ron

Ron,
I have gained muscle from the NO workouts. I am the largest in lean condition I have ever been. I train 2 days per week but for the last 2 months I have trained on a split workout 3 times per week. I am now training on the 3 day a week split using 3 exercises per workout.

At my age I want to find the best way to train. Most of my training is done on Eccentric Edge equipment.
God Bless,
Charlie

I do a similar negative only workout similar to the one outlined in "The Nautilus Bodybuilding Book." I won't do it more than 1x per week.
