"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

Negatives Are TOUGH

I tried the B routine in Dr. Dardens routine when the packing and loading phase started with Hudlow.. It was:

Leg Press 16 reps
Neg Chin 6 reps (10 seconds)
Neg Dip 7 reps (8 seconds)
Shrug 7 reps
Lateral raise 9 reps
Calf raise 11 reps
Abdomen 15 reps

I was dizzy after just the leg press and neg chin. Negatives are tough. I can't imagine doing them more than once a week. I can't imagine how anyone can do more than 2 sets in one workout!

Does anyone do more than 2 per workout? If so ho many workkouts per week?

Ron

I have been training negative only for 16 months. I trained whole body 5 to 6 exercises per workout for 12 months. I would train for 4 weeks then take 10 days off. For the last 4 months I have been doing a split workout of 3 exercises per workout. I will post the results in July.

That's interesting to hear Charlie. What type of frequency have you been using?

Thank you,

Ron

I have been training 2 days per week until I went on the split workout. I train back/bicep on Mon., legs on Wed., and chest/delts/tricep on Fri. I use 1 set per exercise with 4-6 reps per set. A rep will take 6-10 seconds to perform. I hope that helps.

Just wandering if I could get some opinions on this.
What does everyone feel is the appropriate number of reps for Negatives, Assuming you are doing them for 8 seconds and stopping when you can no longer lower for more than 4 seconds.
Any feedback would be great.

I guess it would have to be bewteen 5 and 12 dependant on how long you can go for and your predominant fibre type

Wouldn't the weight dictate how long you could go for??

One more questions. When doing negatives for an exercise with a short ROM what cadance do most people on here use. Examples being Wrist Curls and Calf raises.
Its hard to do negative calf raises because it takes alot of guy to lift the weight and no easy way to do it.

Thanks again for the details Charlie. How many sets do you do for your back, legs etc.? What exercises can you do for legs when doing negatives? Do you train with someone or do NA?

Ron

Ron,
I do train with a partner. Most of my training is done on Eccentric Edge equipment (negative attitude). A normal back/bicep workout is no behind neck, no chins, no shrugs. A normal leg workout is no leg ext., no leg curls, no leg press. I hope that helps.

Do your calf raises as singles, and use the other foot to help with the positive portion.

Thanks for the insite Charlie. Good luck with the full neg workouts. I look forward to hearing about your results. From the little I do now (neg. chin & dip) they are very good. Not sure what type of tole with will take on recovery etc.

Ron
