"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

If one were to run sprints, when would be the best time? Right now I'm working out M-W-F total body. Since the days after should normally be left for rest/recovery, what would be the best reccomendation as for when to do sprints?

(I'm not sure if this has been posted before because the 'Search' is not working right now.)

One thing I would not do is run them when really tired because when you're tired your form is going to break down and that's when you'd be most likely to injure yourself.

If you are talking 40-200 meter sprints, then I would run on the same days as I weight train. Sprinting like that builds muscle in my experience and it is consistent with weight training. Some may not like the pounding the joints take, but if that's what you like and you can get away with it, then.......
I would run on the same days I weight train. Before or after the weights is up to you.

As the other poster said you are more likely to injure yourself if you sprint with fatigued muscles. So I suggest sprinting before your weights workout. That's what I do. Do you sprint for sports-specific fitness? I'm a cop and sprint to make me better at chasing people on foot.

As for the search function, that hasn't worked for as long as I have been a member here.

Hi,

The above guys are correct. If you want to sprint, do if right BEFORE your weight training and then rest up until its time to train again.

I still sprint from time to time, although as I age it gets tougher on my joints. But I am still proud of the fact that I can still do a sub-60 second quarter mile.....at almost 52 years of age....Not too bad for an old fart!

Good training,

We do all our HIIT work at the beginning of the workout session, then do the HIT work with the weights. Our intervals are not sprints but jumping, so they may be a little different. I believe one of the other guys above mentioned that your form will go in the sewer if you sprint after weights...this is why we jump first, especially with the focus on proper knee form/stabilization.

We do full body lifting after those Intervals as well and only workout 2-3 times per week. These workouts are very intense and recovery is at a premium.
