"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

This is one of 93 photos of Andy McCutcheon that are used in The New High-Intensity Training to illustrate the recommended exercises.

For anyone's information: Dr. Ken published a monthly newsletter for 3 years (from 1985 to 1987) called the "The Steel Tip". It was (and is)
a compilation of great training information. John Wood (former Michigan football player and son of long time Bengals strength coach Kim Wood) has reprinted the entire collection in book-bound form. Dr. Ken has added his modern
commentary to each article. 330 pages of
"High Intensity" information. Anyone interested can check it out at:

The Steel Tip - Worth its Weight in Gold!

Ellington Darden

I have them all from the 1980s . . . and they were all well written and sound. John Wood has done a good job in making them available under one cover.

In my opinion, the Steel Tip newsletter was the best thing ever written on strength training. I still have the originals in a three-ring binder but aren't in the best shape from constantly used for reference and inspiration.

I'll be picking up a copy of the re-prints for sure.

Besides Ellington,Dr. Ken was the only other accessible voice of reason during the 80's. I subscribed to Powerlifting USA just to get his column. His routines were geared more to brute strength rather than bodybuilding. I trained primarily with barbells then. Ken's routines were set up to utilize both machines and free weights. Leistner's protocol called for doing the 1st 3 reps slowly and then using a regular pace without worrying about the lowering speed. That's the way AJ advocated exercising in Bulletin #1. Ken also utilized multiple routines and wasn't opposed to doing a 2nd set of the same exercise. The Steel Tip was awesome!

Doc has been writing for over 40 years. I am biased but I find him to be, the most genuine , straight to the point author, yet still entertaining. The most amazing thing about his writing is that he has been giving the exact same ( always relevant ) advice for 40 years while still providing an enjoyable read. He never got caught up in any of the b.s. minutia that is involved in the strength training community. His experience and time in the trenches cannot approached by anyone. The best.

Guys,

Like Dr. Darden, I had the entire set of Steel Tips. And like Crotalus, mine are well worn from use. So I ordered the new collection from John Wood at
Functional Hand Strength.

It came in the mail today. Bound in first class quality, with Dr. Ken writing a present day commentary on each issue. Worth every dollar in my book, or for my book as the case may be.

I did a search and still came with nothing ....

I tried that and all it did was link me back to this thread.

So I contacted them by their site's 'live help' and Nancy sent me the correct link to it, but when I tried to provide it here as she requested I just got a 'Java script error' ... whatever that means ???

Anyway, thanks for letting us know it's now available. I'm interested most in Ken's recent comments on the past issues to see if he still sees things the same as he did in the 80's.

I would assume he does and though I think of all his info as rock-solid , I now see / admit to other ways that I did not when I first read the Steel Tip.

Hi Alan,

The shipping to uk is 46 dollars, this is flat rate, so you might want to buy a few more books to make it worth while.
