"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

When Brian Johnston & I did radio-shows together in 2001, we really jelled on-air. Despite both of our on-line personalities that sound rather formal, even harsh at times, both of us were jolly-souls from the tone of voices. But, MORE THAN THE SUPERFICIAL, Johnston & I frequently left our conversations scratching our heads about the claims of the other. Not that we would entirely disagree, but just that we had not heard what the other had to say ever before.

One such example that left my headscratching was SUGAR-WATER. Not that it was totally alien, because Ellington Darden had years earlier recommended sugar be added into mixtures of creatine for optimal absorption, which I must admit that Darden also had me scratching my head on that one. Well, not go into the virtues of sugar, both Johnston & Darden were correct in their respects.

Without going into the dozens of things that Johnston had me scratching my head in the beginning, only to discover later that he was ahead-of-the-game, THE LATEST IS BAKING-SODA. Around the same time as the claim about sugar-water, Johnston had mentioned that moderate use of BAKING-SODA was beneficial as a training-aid. Flash forward to today, an article on WebMD summarizes research released in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition that finds "Baking Soda Fights Fatigue."

Of course, everything in moderation, especially in accordance to individual health-concerns, because too much baking-soda can be dangerous, like everything else, and people sensitive to SODIUM itself could be exposing themselves to risk.

This one isn't a new discovery, it goes back at least 20 or 30 years.

the problem....it's almost impossible to take in enough to get the effect and your sodium intake would be insane.

Josh,

Like yourself, I remember Brian being surprised too that I had not heard of this as a training-aid, but still KUDOS to guys like yourself & Johnston that really have tried the differents variations of training, and actually have approval or disapproval of these items.

I've posted this before but again, to anyone interested and you should be, I have to refer you to the book "The Ph Miracle" by Dr. Robert Young. There isn't anyone who knows more about this than him. The whole premise behind bicarbonate supplementing is about acid-base balance.

The fact is is that most of us are acidic to begin with and this can be verified by simply testing your urine with the correct litmus paper. If you are on the acidic side your body is telling you that you need more bicarbonate. Veggies and fruit are loaded with the cell salts you need to make bicarbonate wich is, among other things, one of the biggest reasons for eating them in the first place.

Dr young is a microbiologist who is by far the worlds leading expert in dry and live blood cell analysis and his research clearly proves that the more water you drink, the more veggies (especially green) and fruit (only low sugar fruit such as grapefruits, lemon, lime, avocados, etc.) along with bicarbonate supplementing the better the quality of blood.

His books also talk about peoples fear of not getting enough protein and the farce behind it not how much protein the body actually needs not to mention the right kind of protein. Seriously, you need to read this book to have any kind of meaningful discussion about this here.

I use to take baking soda at times as I thought it had a positive effect on body PH, however, a couple of years ago I switched to Dr Willard's water:

http://www.willardswater.com/

I buy the "dark" as it has 50 million year old "fossized plants" added.

You have to be careful where you buy it as some sellers dilute it.

One ounce makes 1 gallon. I drink 1-2 quarts a day.

I noticed a positive effect almost immediately.

That is by far the number one thing people can do for their health. People should drink as a bare minimum at least 1/litre per 50lbs of bodyweight or as a good rule of thumb, 4 litres a day. But just as important is the quality of water.

A good water ionizer is worth it's weight in gold as the water should have a ph of about 9.5 and an ORP of at least -250. Ph drops are a good substitute if one doesn't have access to an ionizer as these basically raise the oxegyn content of the water.

This is the magic behind Dr. Darden's superhydration schedule as almost everyone is chronically dehydrated. It is almost always the underlying cause of every disease people end up with. I've read where the body uses around 3 litres of water a day just to carry on it's normal day to day functions. It makes total sense when you think about it, when babies are born their water content is about 80% which is why their skin is "baby" soft and by the time we pass on it's down to about 50%.

I recall a while back where Doug Mcguff was telling someone that in the majority of cases when an elderly person gets rushed into the ER with their eyes sunk way in and looking like death that the standard treatment is to hook up an IV and start hydrating the person and after a couple of bags of water and saline the patient suddenly comes back to life and often leave to go back home within a couple of hours.

One final note about Dr Darden's superhyration schedule is that if the water being drank is ionized water the results I think would dramatically improve upon what is already great results.

Is there really any health benefit behind alkalinising/ionising water?

The following webpages made me think it is false marketing to sell expensive water-filter related products.

Benny - Do you know what Brian is doing these days? His Zone Training website appears to be off-line and IART seems to be run by someone else.

Mike Lipowski now runs the IART, i don't think Brian has much if any to do with it.

TO: OmarZ

Every once and awhile. Brian sends me a message.

If I had to guess, Brian accomplished so very much (in terms of publication and pushing his own training, while training others) within a decade, especially the last 5-years, that he needed some time for himself, and his family. At the same time, Brian is both a musician & a philosopher, so I would not be surprised if he expanding into those areas.

As to IART, I believe Brian is still involved, just more in an advisory role. And, Mike L. that is running it has kept it true to the vision of Johnston, as far as I can tell.

If you have heartburn, baking soda works great for me -- usually too many jalapeno peppers or onions.

One teaspoon in a glass of warm water usually helps almost immediately.

And cheaper than Tums and Rolaids.

Baking soda will also eat the crud off your car battery terminals.

If you're out of toothpaste, wet a small amount of baking soda and brush.

Superman uses it to neutralize Kryptonite :)

Interesting, more than the baking soda issue I'm more interested in your relationship with Brian and the radio shows you did? Can you tell us more about your connections with him and the radio shows? It must have been great to actually converse with Brian Johnston.

Tony - I've been brushing my teeth with baking soda for several months. They look and feel much cleaner. My dentist hasn't noticed any detrimental affects
