Im 53.I can cope with the usual ravages of age, hair loss, failing vision etc.
What I always feared was the tell tale signs that many of my friends are now developing.
Mainly saggy pecs and wasting thighs.Even those who train.
I myself have shown no signs of either of these.Infact, im in better shape than I was 20 years ago.Pecs are hard, and show no signs of drooping, legs havent atrophied.Is HIT a factor, or is it simply genes that are repsonsible?
I Still train weekly, as I have for the past 7 years.

I will be 48 this year. If you're better than you were at 32 years - then you're doing something right!! I am not better now than I was in my 30's. I believe it's probably due to a large part with life's stresses (work, family...).

What is your routine looking like? How many days per week? Over the years have you increased/decreased?

I am 52 and have good genes aging-wise. I haven't noticed any deterioration in physique or function. Of course, I train.

I suspect that you can keep in reasonable shape till 70 or even 80. If you are blessed to live longer than that, perhaps performance enhancing drugs would help reverse some of the aging effects.

At 52 I am beginning to see the signs. Pec area under my arm is less full - a little saggy in fact. I see this on lots of older men who train.

My neck is starting to get a but turkey like. A little loose skin.

Overall I think I'm in better shape than many men much younger than I but I do see the signs of aging. :(

Hi Ron.Up until last year,I had a duo Squat,st gen p/over,Multi ex, and Nautilus leverage machines at home.
I doubled my stength on the duo in 6 months, unfortunately without corresponding size increases, but it was a good time.
I sold it all, as i was moving house.I now train weekly.The gym i use did have a full range of Nitro, but the idiot who owns it,exchange a lot of it for Life Fitness(he needs shooting)
Current routine is.
Cybex hip press 15/20 reps.
Nitro pullover 8/12
Assisted chins 8/12
Nitro chest 8/12
Nitro delt 8/12
Nitro OHP 8/12
Trap bar deads 8/12
Seated dip 8/12
One set of each to Failure, once a week.

Hi Coomo,

Looks like a good routine. I had experimented with 1x/week but felt I flattened out some and would get more sore ever time I worked out. I now workout every 3-6 days - with the average being 4 (if work permits).

That's always a bummer when you are happy with the equipment that a place has and they downgrade!

I believe some of the perceived "sagging" in middle-age and older years is actually sagging skin, rather than muscles. Skin/collagen loses elasticity with age. Getting older SUCKS! It's not for wimps, thats for sure.

***Yes this is absolutely the case. And I find no matter how well you eat, no matter what top-notch supplements you take, it makes almost no difference.

Sure - you can't deny it, but I have kept myself relative. Gaining Fat for me (if I take in too many calories) pretty much shows up as the same Fat (unsightly). But, yesterday I trained a woman that I have been training over 22 years and she actually said I looked better than ever - so who's to say? As you age, you will make wiser choices as far as training. One thing I notice for sure is that I am Lazier......

Regarding being lazier...I find I don't have quite the "drive" or raw aggression in the gym I had in my younger days. Lower T levels subsequent to aging tend to diminish that raw drive that propels one to train like a savage. I still hit that "savage mental zone" now and again...but not nearly as often as I did 15 to 20 years ago.

But then again, I no longer care much about being bodybuilder-huge either, so it's not a big deal really. I'm currently happy with looking "like a very in shape looking middle-age guy" these days.

Though I would love to add an inch to my upper arms. Pretty happy with the rest of my development though, at my age. (47)

Lazier in General, but I've always been a sleepy boy. My Intensity in the Training is relatively the same.

I think that's a bigger factor than lower T levels. As you age other things become more important, as important, etc. You also learn to realize your limitations and that you won't get huge and win Mr. Olympia or something. That drive is not there... you also realize that if you have some 'easier' workouts, that it's not the end of the world, that it doesn't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Overall, this has an effect consciously and subconsciously. My physique fluctuates regardless of how hard I train or don't train... one day you look in the mirror and impress yourself... other days you wonder what the heck happened. When I find myself impressive, I automatically train harder... the incentive is there. When I look worse than usual (whatever causes it), then I tend to slack off, since all the insane training in the world won't do a thing at that time in my body's responses.

I concur. I've been loving the past year or two of training, and I find I look better (more developed in my less developed areas). I'm not sure who else is over 50 (I'm 48), but I'm sure there is a difference with each passing year... and Fred is older than some of us on here and is noticing things. I also think it's partially genetic (Fred is fair haired and has more 'delicate' skin, which has an effect in experiencing aging).

I get the velvet skin thing showing up when I cut.
I feel and look far more balanced than when I was younger (now 46) mostly because I train for balance now.

Even though I'm young, I do worry about this for the future. Having lost 75-80lbs of fat, I've got some loose skin, which I can't imagine is going to be helped by aging!

Although I'm sure if I'm in a similar shape to you guys when I'm older I won't give a damn! :)

I would think your skin is more likely to be helped by time than that of somebody who doesn't have this issue.

I am 62. My peak strength was at 53 and has declined some every year since. At 60 I changed direction some and got leaner, started competing in running events and challenged myself with seeing how many chins, dips and push-ups I could perform in addition to my regular weight workouts. The change was fun and I looked better than I had in a long time.

I miss mostly miss the energy levels I had in my younger days. Not much you can do about it, just accept it and move on, it isnt so bad.
