"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"

JOSH LOOKS GOOD. gotta give credit where credit is due! he is like me, in his 40s, and i have done something very similar, physique-wise,in my 40s as well.

i have always trained h.i.t. [literally, "by the book", h.i.t., dr darden/a.j./nautilus, h.i.t., since, about 14 years of age, to present.

i have always trained correctly, for my entire, training, experience, [over 30 years]. however, i, "let the diet go" in my mid to late 30s, to my mid 40s--i went from a pretty steady/healthy weight of 180s lbs -90s to a high of 259 lbs [at the worst]!!!!

"you can not train off a bad diet"!!!

i had a lot of muscle under the fat but, my diet went "haywire" in my late 30s to mid 40s.and i looked terrible! at 259lbs i had to do something!!! thank god, i discovered the Atkins diet--luckily, my cousin, steered me into trying this diet. this diet was truly a miracle diet for me! i went from the 250s down to 165lbs in 8 months! -p.s. you know you are getting really fat when people start recommending diets!!!

i no longer am on the atkins diet [i have been off it for over a year now], but, i still am able to maintain a healthy [and impressive physique at 180-185]. for me, i look my absolute best at 172lbs. at my lowest weight [165lbs], it was way, too, hard, to maintain, and i looked a little drawn out [in the face]. but 185 i look pretty close to my best [slightly ripped] so i am happy at the 180-185lbs weight, 0n a," regular diet".

but, if i ever get into trouble with the weight, i can, simply, jump back on the low carb/no carb diet for a few weeks, and i will be back to near perfection.

the "h.i.t. stuff" works. i dont even care what form of it you train with, as long, as, it is intense, and to failure, 1, or 2, times per week, for 20 to 30 minutes--i know this is the correct formula to stimulate growth, even into the late 40s--i am 48 years old and i am still getting stronger--

but, a proper diet, is the most, important, consideration, to attain, the most, dramatic, effect in ones physique, in your late 40s, [if you have been training correctly, ie using hit].

I was actually talking to Josh about this at the show. Sure he has no real calves genetics but I was surprised just how much they would pop when he flexed them.

Muscles, symmetry, proportion, conditioning it is quite elusive how it all works together or against itself.

Andrew,

What do you think about Joshua's traps. I think that they look out of proportion relative to his body size.

Scott,

I could ask Joshua if he would take some pictures of himself "taking a dump" if you want me to and email them to you. I don't think that it would be appropriate to post them here for you. Interesting thought process Scott -- I would never have thought of pictures of Joshua "taking a dump".

I'm sure you would have come up with the idea as you've posted so many other pictures one of which shows him in the nude possibly coming out of the bathroom. If your going to post some pictures of Josh why not actually post some from the actual contest in question?

Yes hence the silly picture I had him take showing the traps, they've gotten a bit crazy. Interesting story though about what likely caused it.

Andrew,

I know the story I think. It involves the ohp and a program Joshua is using.

But I would like to here your explanation. What did Joshua tell you at the show? And what your impression of the looks of his traps since you saw him last?

I never met Joshua -- and certainly haven't had the chance to see his body change over time.

How much bigger were the traps? or how had they changed?

Hi Mike,

I was hoping Andrew would respond because he saw Joshua. I spoke to Joshua on the phone, but I didn't see his traps grow.

Joshua told me that his traps got too big and that he was training another body builder and the same thing happened. Joshua says he has some pictures where his traps look bizarre.

Joshua thinks this is happening from a change he made to his over head press. I am working on a set of computer programs for training. I had sent Joshua a computer, with the program and it was installed on OHP.

This program was a visual pacer the shows the position of the movement arm and a position that the user "should" be at. One can program any rep timing they want into this. 2/2 5/5 10/10 4/8 20/3 7/13, whatever. The speed of the pacer however, never moves at a constant velocity.

Joshua took it out of his program because he felt it was producing freaky results in his traps. That is how I understand it.

But I haven't witnessed any of this. So again I was hoping Andrew would answer.

I'm not sure Josh even realized they were getting so ahead of his physique as it were. Traps on a natural guy don't tend to pop unless flexed purposefully. Even in the crab you usually lean in so much big traps don't look disproportionate.
So it wouldn't really look like an issue to him until he was ripped and seeing things 3D. Now that said I made my point with him by taking a hulk pick and (as he may have experienced it) rubbing his nose in the situation a bit by posting the picks. The point was symmetry and proportion, as well as most other real gauges of muscle progress...are best served by getting very, very lean.

My hypothesis as to cause is this - Because of his crazy strength the need for prefatigue to work on the OHP set up a unique situation. Not the volume per se but the cumulative angles. Traps tend to be strong, dense and recover well. Because of all the overlapping interactive elements of all the various back musculature, the traps are easy to mix in without singling out. This may have kept them, in the past, from popping so much for him. I think the multiple pre fatigues worked them (without letting them recover much between sets and before the unique RenX OHP) from enough angles that he sort of created a perfect Josh trap set. When you add the moves together it can be considered a giant set.

Interestingly the year before when we saw him only in a dress shirt, both my better half and I remarked that his upper back and neck posture was different and even somewhat hunched. I tend to think that (and it shows in one of his lats as well) he may have some nerve damage from past super heavy freeweight lifting.

Regards,
Andrew

Ever since that Walk the walk thread I have been asking for decent pictures of Josh from that fabled contest and so far I've only seen one ( at the beginning of this thread?). Someone does take photo's at these major contests but maybe this contest was actually in someones basement or something and camera's weren't allowed??

Although this thread has gotten exceptionally weird in Josh's defence you are not suppose to take pictures at an IDFA event. Last time I supported the IDFA they tried to kick James Pate out because he was taking pictures of Mike Lipowski and Andrew Shortt.

The story was they had hired a photographer to shoot the event and wanted the competitors to buy photo's from that person. The organization of course gets there end of the deal. Never did go back to one of their shows. However this would explain why there are no good shots of Josh posted from the show.

I know all about that as one time I took lot's of photos at local contests and sometimes they'd raise a fuss because I wasn't the house photographer.
In this case these folks who are obsessed with posting shots of Joshua must certainly be motivated enough to buy a few of the professional photo's to post here.

On another note how are things with you and your gym Michael? My friend David ( who I think you met) who's dream is to open a gym like yours is still dreaming.I keep telling him he'd better do something before he gets to old and cranky like me and he can't even move the heavy dumbells much less run a gym.
