"Doing more exercise with less intensity,"
Arthur Jones believes, "has all but
destroyed the actual great value
of weight training. Something
must be done . . . and quickly."
The New Bodybuilding for
Old-School Results supplies
MUCH of that "something."

Dr. Darden, Does a 60-Second Set = 3 20-Second Sets?

Does one 60-second set to failure equal 3 20-second sets to failure?

I'm sure that you know well the attempt by the HIT critics to push the idea that multiple sets per exercise are better than one.

-But in their tests, they do one set which I must presume is at regular speed and at that speed I can complete a set of 8 in about 20 seconds.

-We do a set of 8 at 4/4 tempo, which takes 64 seconds.

-Their time-under-tension (TUT) is 20 seconds, which is not enough to hit the hypertrophy threshold.

-Our TUT is 64 seconds, which is plenty enough. (And sometimes when you program two exercises per bodypart as you do in TNHIT beginner's routine #1 with leg extensions and leg press or rows and pulldowns as in intermediate routine #2 the TUT is even greater)

Can we say that the reason they need to do 3 sets is because 1 of our sets, being three times longer, is equal to 3 of theirs?
