Tom Platz Accused of Using Fake Weights?!!!

Bill Kazmaier claimed in a 2016 seminar that Tom Platz's squat off with Fred Hatfield, at the FIBO in 1993, was marred by the use of fake weight plates. 500 (495?) X 23 reps.

Personally I think he did use real weights and wouldn't Hatfield have used the same? Kazmaier focused on Platz cheating not Hatfield.

I know they performed a 1RM (or close) then repped out with about 500lbs.

This is the first I've heard of it. I'm wondering if Kazmaier is suffering from squat envy. He mentions Platz's 10th and 17th reps had similar formant then he collapsed at 23. And that the bar didn't bend as much as it should and the plates themselves looked odd.

Didn't Ken Leistner do 400 X 20 on camera? Platz especially if on drugs I'd imagine could do what he did.

I wonder if Kazmaier tried it later and couldn't do it. Taller for sure but why make a big deal about it then?

Heard about that, like yourself mate, I instantly thought of Dr Ken. Haven't seen the video of Platz squatting the 500lb for 23 reps, but I would imagine he was using a piston like pace, one thing I can say about piston style reps is, one minute your cruising, and then all of a sudden you hit a brick wall, the fatigue just sneaks up on you. This would explain why Platz suddenly came to a grinding halt.

Since this Brad Castlebury character has came on the since, theres been something of a witch hunt going on for fake weight users. Heck theres old pics of Arnold strict curling what looks like 500lb plus lol, its been going on for a long time. But in this particular case, I think Bill K is wrong, my question to him would be, why is he only bringing this up over 3 decades later??

I'm not sure whether this precedes the Castlebury thing though. I thought that was just in the last 12 months.

I admire Kazmaier's achievements but in this case I think he's being a d*ck. He's known for his self-praising/bragging and sometimes aggressiveness.

Geoff Capes was interviewed on the internet a few years ago and was asked the question 'if you could take one person on a desert island with you who would that be?', I think it inferred either Sigmarsson or Kazmaier (or another competitor) ; Capes responded 'Kazmaier, because he was such a nasty sod nobody would mess with you!'. I'm paraphrasing but it's close to what he said.

I hate hearing this shit ... especially when Platz is one of my favorites, LOL.

I hate to say it but I also heard the same about Ken's 407 X 23 ....

I've ignored that too, LOL.

Dr Ken doing 407 X 23 makes it more believable.

Viator squats 12 reps with 500 after the leg presses and extensions but Platz (basically fresh) and known for his insane feats of high rep high load squats can't do 500 X 23?!!!

I'm sumising but like I said, I think Kaz tried it and couldn't do it. Perhaps partly for the same reason Hatfield couldn't (but beat him 1RM); practice low reps get good at 'em, practice higher reps, get good at 'em. I think some powerlifters have a problem with bodybuilders. He self admittedly claimed he had trouble with a 7ft bar because of inflexibility from benching and was considerably taller.

But to try and sully Platz's reputation decades later...sounds like envious BS.

Long live the 'Golden Eagle'!!!

As long as we are going back in time let's open up The Who really killed Kennedy thing!! Ha ha . It seems these days it's more popular than ever to go back and discredit people. Look at Platz's legs and reputation . I would guess he could do more!!

I think Kazmaier also accused Platz of being 'the man on the grassy knoll' as well lol!!!

It must have been a fake bar too. Watch the bar whip as Platz is moving.

Also Platz is wearing a squat suit that probably rebounds him out of the bottom of the squat. It's not like Platz is squatting 500 raw.

And to top it all off....and this is the worst accusation of them all................The coup de grace!!!...........Fake blonde hair!!! Kazmaier claims that Platz bleached his hair and this had an aesthetic and performance enhancing effect during the FIBO.

I'm aghast!!!

23 reps seems to be a theme for squat demonstrations. Coincidence? Or is there a deeper meaning? Kinda like notradame having a hunchback , while notre dame has quarterbacks and half backs. Did you ever ponder that? ( the last one is directly from the sopranos: if you don't get it watch it on you tube!!)

Read about this quite a while back. I choose to believe Platz - no doubt at all. Saw the Dr Ken squats video, believe that too. Anyone got any thoughts on Kevin Tolbert's legendary squatting feat?

I'm surprised this isn't brought up more ... I guess only the 'old timers' know about it.

600 for nearly 30 reps is something else and to follow that immediately with SLD in the 450 range !

I did hear one claim that the squats weren't barbell squats ... ?? Anyone know for sure ?

All top bodybuilders have used fake weights to promote themselves either in photoshoots or the demonstrations of yesteryear.
I remember feeling inferior at how Vince Gironda was pictured handling huge dumbells in exercises that I could only handle mediocre resistance. Only to realise that the bells were wooden and many of the physique stars of the 70`s were pictured with them LOL.
Franco too was renowned for his strength feats , but I am sure many of those weights in the demo`s were fake too.

Who's the guy in the first pic? I'm impressed he's hanging with Franco on the laterals there lol! Wooden db's or not; despite looking like he doesn't workout. Is it Bob Kennedy or some actor I don't recognise perhaps?

Looked The Sopranos reference up.

Yeah coincidences happen everywhere, especially if you go looking for them and then erroneously ascribe some hidden meaning to them.

I don't know about the 23 rep theory though, we'd need more than a couple of examples. Conspiracies aside I'm thinking they're aiming for 20 reps, choose to do a few more then balk mentally and physically. That or the TUL/TUT for 23 reps is about the wall for most people.

Yes, I had read somewhere that Kevin Tolbert's may have been machine squats, but can't seem to find where I read it.

If those are real dumbells if sure even Franko would have to swing those to get them up .
